Meet our leaders…

Maria Strus, MD President, UMANA Ohio Chapter

After a ten-year career in process control engineering and technical publications, Dr. Strus graduated from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in 1999 and completed her residency in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. She currently practices emergency medicine in Ohio emergency departments of critical access hospitals in underserved areas throughout Ohio. Dr. Strus also currently serves on the board of the United Ukrainian Organizations of Ohio.

Bohdan Pichurko, MD Treasurer, UMANA Ohio Chapter

Dr. Pichurko, who retired from the Cleveland Clinic from the Respiratory Institute on June 30, 2021, dedicated his life work to pulmonary and critical care medicine.  Dr. Pichurko completed his residency at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 1984. Upon his retirement, the RI CPET Lab, an exercise physiology test lab, was dedicated to him and is the first facility dedication at the Cleveland Clinic unrelated to a memorial or financial endowment.  Dr. Pichurko also directed the Pulmonary Laboratories at the Respiratory Institute of the Cleveland Clinic and in 2013 and 2021, he received Faculty of the Year, Pulmonary Critical Care Medicine.

George Jaskiw, MD Delegate, UMANA Ohio Chapter

Dr. Jaskiw practices psychiatry at the Cleveland Veteran’s Administration. He graduated from University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine in 1980, completed internship at the Toronto Western Hospital, residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School in 1985, National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in 1997 and fellowship at NIMH in 1990. He has numerous publications in his field. Dr. Jaskiw has held multiple positions in various community organizations including president/principal of Ridna Shkola and currently serves as vice-president of the United Ukrainian Organizations of Ohio and is on the Board of Directors at the Ukrainian Museum-Archives in Cleveland, Ohio.

Ihor Zachary, MD President Emeritus, UMANA Ohio

Dr. Zachary, who devoted his professional life to ophthalmology, retired on June 30, 2021 after many years of a successful career. He served as Ohio UMANA president from cc to 2015. Dr. Zachary graduated from the Yale University School of Medicine in 1967, completed internship at Buffalo General Hospital in 1968, residency at the University Hospitals of Cleveland in 1973 and fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital in 1974.  He practiced in Northeast Ohio and was most recently affiliated with the Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain, Ohio, and University Hospitals Parma Medical Center. He continues to be active in the Ohio Chapter of UMANA and the Ukrainian community.
